If convicted of aggravated sexual assault, Sonja Childers will be part of a rare minority. In the world of sexual abuse perpetrators, on average just 12% are female.
As testimony began on Tuesday, her alleged victim chronicled how the relationship developed. Sonja, a bus driver for Durham School Services. The 12-year-old boy, a 7th grader at Frenship Junior High.
At first things were innocent. Friendly trips to Sonic but then, according to testimony, the alleged abuse. Between 10 and 20 instances of sexual intercourse at the defendant's home. The relationship only uncovered after co-workers at the bus company supposedly caught Childers in a lie when she was set to take the boy home in her personal car.
Introduced into evidence on Tuesday, five alleged love letters from a 27-year-old Childers to a 12-year-old boy. Signed, "I love you very much, me." Sonja supposedly keeping her name off the documents to avoid incrimination.
The defense struggling through day one, engaged in damage control. Sources close to the case say Childers is expected to testify on her own behalf.
