High-heeled men Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD)- The court house lawn was covered with red high heels, Saturday as more than 200 people prepared for the 4th annual, international Walk a Mile in Her Shoes men's march. The Lubbock Rape Crisis Center hosted the walk and its all part of sexual assault awareness month.

Hundreds were ready to brave the pain to show support and raise awareness as high heel wearing men ran, walked, and limped a mile around the court house to raise awareness. Leslie Timmons of the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center says raising awareness is the first step in preventing sexual assault cases. "The point of it is to change the perception and the reality of men as perpetrators of sexual assault to men preventing sexual assault" Timmons says. Last year, the rape crisis center helped 332 victims in Lubbock, one step at a time, this group hopes that number will drop.

The Lubbock Rape Crisis Center hopes to raise around $26,000 to help victims. "Education and awareness is very important in the primary prevention of sexual assault" Timmons explains. The organization does community education and has counseling and other services for victims.
