Old Tech tradition with new emphasis

More than 1500 students cruised for a good cause Saturday at the 14th Tour de Tech Terrace.

While the tour has traditionally featured cyclists stopping at specified houses in the neighborhood to drink beer, this year organizers said they were trying to phase most of that out and focus on helping the community.

Organizers also cooperated with Lubbock Police to ensure everyone's safety.

"They're trying to do something good with it," Officer John Hayes said. "We've had a little more coordination this year with the kids that are organizing it and kind of getting stuff worked out together so we can get as good of an even as we can."

The Tour began at 3 p.m. Saturday on 30th street and riders cruised for a couple of hours around the neighborhood. Participants were asked to bring canned items for the South Plains Food Bank.
