Police are waiting for dental records to identify the man killed in a crash along Highway 84 near Slaton Tuesday afternoon, after the cab of his pickup truck caught fire badly burning his body.
"The engine department of his truck exploded, and then a couple minutes later exploded again," said Shawn Clark, a witness to accident.
Police say the victim was driving east on Highway 84 toward Slaton and then suddenly swerved into the median and into the westbound lane where a semi truck collided with the victim.
The impact was so intense the bed of the pickup came off the truck while the truck's cab was dragged beneath the semi.
Clark was directly behind the semi before it crashed into the pickup. "The 18-wheeler plowed into him, him the brakes and then finally came to a stop," said Clark. "I was running up and could see the black truck was up underneath the 18-wheeler and had already caught fire."
Police say the semi was carrying fuel and that the driver is lucky his 18-wheeler didn't catch fire as well. He was not hurt.
Police say it may take a few days before the medical examiner can positively identify the male victim. They are still trying to determine what caused the victim to swerve into the other lanes.
