RANSOM CANYON ,TX (KCBD) – Law enforcement officers from across the state rode their bikes from Midland to Ransom Canyon Friday to honor two fallen officers from the South Plains.

The Ride for the Fallen stretches nearly 3,000 miles to honor officers killed in the line of duty.

Pedaling to every corner in Texas in just two weeks, officers from across the state will make 22 stops. One for every officer who died in the Lone Star state last year.

"It doesn't matter if you're sheriff's deputy, corrections officer, police officer, or a constable. If you wear that uniform and you put on a badge and a gun and you take an oath to protect those who can't protect themselves…it makes us a family," said Sgt. Mike Delgado with the Corpus Christi Police Department.

They stop for ceremonies in the communities of their fallen brothers for their loved ones. Friday they honored Post State Trooper Jonathan McDonald who was in a car crash while en route to another accident in November.

They also paid tribute to former Point Comfort Police Chief Richard Brash. Brash is from Slaton and began his career in Post. He died of a heart attack while breaking up an argument in Point Comfort in 2006. His sister, Sandy Self also from Slaton attended the ceremony.

It was a display of selflessness. Riding in this heat as long as they've ridden to honor these fallen officers it's really heartwarming," Self said.

"It's an honor to do this for these families to let them know that even though these officers are not with us here on the earth anymore they're not going to be forgotten and their sacrifice is not in vein," said Delgado.

Saturday they'll head to Amarillo to honor another. The trek across Texas will continue until they convene in Austin for a state ceremony by Governor Perry.

"The brotherhood of officers, they care, they may not know the officers…you may not have ever met them but they have a comradery that is unbelievable.

Trooper McDonald's said she admired the officers riding for her husband.

There's a golf tournament next week in McDonald's name to raise money for scholarships for future officers. We have information just (CLICK_HERE).
