University of Texas officials say enrollment is down 1.6% this year. Total enrollment is 51,438 down from last year's all-time high of 52,273.
Despite the decline, U.T. remains the largest single-campus institution in the nation based on enrollment. The university saw a decrease in freshman enrollment this year and the number of undergraduate transfers and new graduate students also fell.
More than a decade ago, U.T. officials said the University's capacity was 48,000 students. Officials have tried to shrink enrollment but admissions have continued to rise.
