Sheriff evacuates homes northwest of Junction

JUNCTION, TX (AP) - A rural Texas neighborhood has been evacuated as gusty winds push wildfires closer.

Joe Mazzeo, spokesman for an interagency team assisting with fire management, says the Kimble County Sheriff ordered the evacuation northwest of the town of Junction Friday because the nearby Oasis fire jumped containment lines on the north end and was approaching Interstate 10.

Kimble County sheriff's dispatcher Kelli Harames said the McGowan Estates was evacuated near Ranch Road 1674 as was as the area around County Road 171. No injuries were reported.

It was not known how many people were impacted. Junction is about 140 miles west of Austin.

The Texas Forest Service reported that extreme fire conditions remain across West Texas and parts of East Texas.

Wildfires in the Possum Kingdom area were 100% contained.
