Tech Softball Drops Another Conference Game

LINCOLN, Neb. (KCBD) – Nebraska hit three home runs as part of a four-run fifth inning to break open the series opener with Texas Tech as the 14th-ranked Huskers won, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

Heidi Foland hit the first of five Nebraska home runs in the second, drilling a one-out shot over the fence in right for the first run of the game.

Tech starter Kelsey Dennis managed to shut down the Huskers over the next two innings before Madison Drake hit the first of her two dingers in the game to lead off the fifth. Drake added a two-run home run in the sixth inning as well.

Ashley Brokeshoulder came on for Tech immediately after, but would fair no batter as Tatum Edwards and Julie Brechtel each added home runs to make it 5-0 Nebraska.

The Tech bats, meanwhile, were shutout for the first time all season as Ashley Hagemann (25-8) was able to work out of several jams early.

The Red Raiders got a runner in scoring position in both the first and second innings, but Hagemann ended both with strikeouts. The right-hander finished with nine strikeouts on the day while allowing six hits and two walks.

Tech had its chance to cut into Nebraska's lead in the sixth as Sandy James drew a one-out walk that was followed by a single from Mikey Kenney. Holley Gentsch and Cydney Allen both struck out, however, to end the rally.

Dennis (12-4) drew the loss for Tech after giving up five runs off five hits and two walks. She reentered the game in the fifth following the second home run off Brokeshoulder.

The loss marked Tech's fifth straight, moving the Red Raiders to 39-12 on the year and 4-11 in Big 12 play. Nebraska, meanwhile, improves to 35-9 and 5-6 in conference.

The two teams will close the series Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for noon at Bowlin Stadium.
