Tech junior earns second Big 12 player of the week honor

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Texas Tech junior Stephen Hagen has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week for the second time this season, conference officials announced Monday.

Hagen's selection is his second this season and the third for the Red Raiders, as Jamodrick McGruder has also earned the honor. Hagen is the first Tech player since 2008 (Roger Kieschnick) to earn player of the week honors twice in one season.

Hagen (Lakebay, Wash.) hit .353 (6-for-17) on the week with two homers, including a grand slam, with six RBI and four walks with only one strikeout.

Hagen became the first Texas Tech player since 2009 to hit a grand slam when he also hit Tech's first opposite field homer of the year on Tuesday against New Mexico while going 2-for-4.

He started the Kansas series going 2-for-4 and hit a home run with the Red Raiders trailing by a run (1-2) in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the game into extra-innings when Tech would eventually win the game in the 10th.

He ended the week going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks against Kansas in the series finale. Hagen scored the game-tying run in the ninth before Tech won the game – taking a sweep in the series – over Kansas. Hagen finished the week with a .500 on-base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage.

It also matches the most Big 12 Player of the Week selections for the Texas Tech program since the 2004 season when five players were awarded as the league's top player of the week.
