Motorists driving on I-27 and South Loop 289 over the next few months can expect night-time main lane closures as part of a Texas Department of Transportation routine maintenance project. Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday evening and will make more than $230,000 in repairs to various segments of the concrete pavement and bridge approaches.
"We anticipate most of the work to be done overnight when less traffic will be affected. The lane closures will give work crews the space needed to make the roadway repairs safely," said Bryan Wilson, P.E., TxDOT Lubbock Area engineering
Drivers should use caution when traveling through the area, Wilson added. "Construction workers will be close to heavy traffic and motorists need to reduce speed and avoid distractions for their own safety and the safety of the workers."
Motorists should keep the following tips in mind when driving through work zones:
—Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.
—Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
—Be patient. Delays from highway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.
—Plan ahead. Leave a few minutes early when traveling through a work zone in order to reach your destination on time.
Motorists can also anticipate ramp closures while repairs are being made. Work is expected to wrap-up around late-July.
