80-year-old earns diploma from LCU

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Students work hard for their degrees, but one Lubbock Christian University student most likely worked longer than the others.

The crowd gave 80-year-old Betty Simmons a huge round of applause Saturday morning. She walked across the stage with a big smile.

Simmons started taking one college class a semester at Midland College back in 1988. In 2002, she started working on her degree in Organizational Management and Leadership.

She's from Midland, and the university says the day after graduation she started working for the Midland Reporter Telegram. Simmons worked for 59 years.

Simmons is the first octogenarian to graduate from LCU. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management and Leadership. It's not clear yet what she plans to do with her new degree.

"She's a warm, generous, friendly person, optimistic and we were so pleased she could graduate," said LCU Chancellor Ken Jones about Simmons.

261 students graduated from LCU Saturday.
