Counselors Helping Monterey Students After Weekend Accident

Monterey High counselors are helping students through the grieving process following a tragic accident, involving three students. Three Monterey high school girls were returning to Lubbock, following Friday night's football game in Odessa. They were north of Seminole on Highway 385 when the driver, 16-year-old Courtney Ward says she moved right to let another vehicle pass. That vehicle clipped her car, forcing her to overcorrect and roll the car.

Passengers Jannel Aboushadid and Shanna Davis were not wearing their seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle. Fifteen year-old Aboushadid died at Covenant Medical Center Saturday morning. Davis remains in critical condition at Covenant, while Ward escaped minor injuries.

Counselors are offering support to those students affected by this tragedy. LISD Counselor Shanna Underwood says, "We had a steady stream of kids this morning, the thing about this happening over the weekend you know, they did have a very impromptu prayer vigil that took place there at Monterey and for a lot of kids, that really did take care of the need to do something, to be with a group, that need to share with other people what they're feeling and experiencing."

Underwood says counselors also educated teachers on how to discuss the tragedy with students.
