There was a different kind of pep rally on Monday at Texas Tech. A community-wide gathering of health care professionals, school officials, and business leaders gathered to launch what's called The Healthy Lubbock Initiative.
The conference focused on how to improve awareness that obesity is dangerous and life-shortening and how to improve access to fitness and healthy lifestyle choices. The head-cheerleader rounding up support for a healthy Lubbock was Dr. Roy Wilson, the new president of the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Wilson says he is particularly concerned about our kids since the obesity rate in children has more than doubled in the last 20 years. He said Monday's conference is the first step in turning that around and making Lubbock the healthiest city in Texas.
