In January of this year, President Bush signed an executive order, creating the Faith Based Initiative. It allows all organizations, including the faith based ones, to compete for federal funding on the same level as any other organization.
On Tuesday, representatives from Lubbock charitable and faith based organizations met for the first Faith Based Initiative conference. They learned how to apply for federal funds. Most of these organizations, currently operate with little or no government funding. This initiative should change that. State representative Carl Isett says, "The government is very good at building highways. It's very good at administering justice but it's not good at meeting the needs of people on an individual level so that's why these programs are important."
The conference was sponsored by Wayland Baptist and Lubbock Christian University.
