A Lubbock family is sifting through the ashes after a Sunday afternoon fire destroyed their home. Almost two dozens firefighters arrived to find thick black smoke filling the street on the 3100 block of Aberdeen.
Neighbor Cody Courtney was in his backyard when he saw a huge cloud of smoke, so he rushed to make sure his neighbors were okay.
"My neighbor, he's an elderly guy, so I was trying to help him out. He was struggling so I got his dog, took care of him, got his wife out of there, and then got him and tried to make sure everyone was okay."
Courtney added, "I've been here all 20 years of my life and he's been there the whole time and he's like a father figure to me. I just wanted to make sure he was okay. Just make sure everyone was okay."
Also another fire on the South Plains damaged a house in Tahoka. Lori Vaca was at her parent's house in Tahoka when her neighbor called, frantically telling her that her houses was on fire.
"I left my kids home with my mom and my dad drove me up here, and this is what we find. Firefighters in the front yard. I'm just really glad that we weren't home. I'm glad that my neighbor made it out with all her kids, too." Vaca said.
