A $26 million project inspired by the Dallas West End and European Architecture breaks ground in Lubbock on Monday. "The Centre" will cover a complete city block, with one building of retail stores, convenient parking, and apartments. It will be the focal point of Overton Park.
"The groundbreaking (Monday) I think signifies something new and unique to Lubbock. The structure, I call it a 21st century facility. It's one building, four stories, and it's even got parking on the roof of the building and in the middle, retail on the bottom -- and it's something very unique to Lubbock," said Delbert McDougal, the Overton Park Renovations Coordinator.
Delbert McDougal says plans for "The Centre" are moving along smoothly. The demolition phase has been a long one, but the mounds of dirt in place now mean construction is moving forward.
"Were expecting 18-20 months construction time, it's one building with I believe 680,000 square feet," McDougal said.
McDougal says the finished project will be spectacular, and be ready to go by Spring of 2005.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 10:00 Monday morning on the corner of 6th St. and University Avenue.
