Coronado survives Game 2

After losing 14-3 in Game 1 of the 5A Regional Finals on Thursday, the Coronado Mustangs were in a must win situation in Game 2 Friday night in Abilene. Nothing new for the Mustangs, who've been in a 0-1 hole the last 3 weeks, only to take 2 on Saturday to advance. This time around, they'd have to win one on Friday and one on Saturday. Coronado rallied for an impressive 16-11 win Friday to force a Game 3 Saturday.

Coronado trailed 7-5 in the 6th, but Brennan Johnson mauled a 2 run homer to tie it at 7 and the very next batter Zach Ancell hit a solo shot to put the Mustangs up 8-7. Bell tied the game at 8 in the 6th. Coronado exploded in the final frame. Paxton De La Garza hit a three run homer in the top of the 7th to seal the deal for the Mustangs, who scored 8 in the 7th and an 8-8 tie stretched to a 16-8 Coronado lead and eventual 16-11 victory.

Coronado and L.D. Bell play Game 3 in Abilene Saturday at 1pm. KCBD NewsChannel 11 was the only Lubbock television station at Friday's game and we'll be there again on Saturday. We'll have complete Extra Innings coverage with highlights and postgame reaction Saturday on the News at 6 and 10.

The winner of tomorrow's game advances to the 5A State Tournament. Coronado last went to State in 1995.
