On Wednesday a Lubbock jury found Pedro Chavez guilty of murder. The jury deliberated for three and a half hours before claiming Chavez did knowingly and intentionally kill 36-year-old Joe Martinez.
On December 19th, an ongoing dispute between the two friends, possibly about Martinez using cocaine, started as a fight then escalated to a shooting. According to Chavez, Martinez had threatened him multiple times, and he fired in self defense.
But Prosecutors say Martinez wasn't armed and if it was in self defense he shouldn't have been shot in the back. On Wednesday night, Chavez was booked in the Lubbock County Jail on a $250,000 bond, he had been out on bond. It was an emotional exit for Chavez and his family.
The punishment phase begins Thursday at 9:15 and the State is seeking life in prison.
