American women are a big step closer to being able to choose silicone breast implants for cosmetic surgery.
An FDA advisory panel has listened this week to emotional arguments for and against the return of the implants, but on Wednesday, that panel has decided to recommend an end to 11 years of restrictions against the implants, allowing all women the option of silicone implants.
Previously, they were allowed only for breast reconstruction. By the way, the silicone implants available now are greatly improved to reduce the risk of leakage. The final decision is up to the FDA, but normally, it follows the recommendation of its scientific advisors.
