If you watched KCBD NewsChannel 11 this weekend, you know the South Plains came together to support a great cause, which was the 28th annual Children's Miracle Network. CMN has grown to include countless fundraisers, and it all comes together every year on this first weekend in June.
We have CMN to thank for more than $13,000,000 in state of the art equipment, and special services for the children of West Texas and Easter New Mexico.
Since CMN is a joint effort of KCBD, UMC, and the Health Sciences Center, I want you to know that I'm grateful too. As President of the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, I can see the difference your donations make at this facility and in the Medical School. Last year alone, your donations purchased 167 thousand dollars worth of specialized pediatric surgical equipment.
It's not enough to use standard tools on a child. Everything has to be scaled down to size, which can be very expensive. However, CMN makes it easier to provide the best equipment to help us treat your child.
You learned this weekend that your donations purchased cooling blankets, IV buggies, and much more. Whether it's life saving equipment or high tech conveniences, they are all intended to help children.
Aside from the tools that CMN provides, it's also easier to recruit great doctors when they know they are coming to a community that supports this institution with more than a million dollars in personal donations earmarked just for kids year after year.
I sure am proud of this community. It took me a while to get here, but I'm looking forward to watching more miracles unfold in the coming years.
I'm Dr. Tedd Mitchell, and this is the President's Prescription.
