DENVER (AP) - Forecasters say temperatures are likely to plunge below freezing in a large swath of Texas as the deep freeze gripping much of the West and upper Midwest extends southward. Meteorologists said today that a new storm is expected to develop in New Mexico and West Texas tomorrow that will move eastward into Oklahoma and Missouri by Friday.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas' top lawman says state troopers won't relaunch disputed traffic checkpoints along the Mexico border that were present for a recent three-week operation that he contends was effective. Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said yesterday that he decided to discontinue the operation because of the criticism. Civil rights groups accuse the agency of targeting immigrants who are in the country without legal documentation.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An FBI agent has testified that some text messages that a former BP engineer deleted from his cellphone had information that could have been evidence in the federal investigation of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Special Agent Kelly Bryson was the first witness to testify when prosecutors began presenting their case today against Kurt Mix. He has pleaded not guilty to obstruction of justice charges.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A wealthy Dallas Dentist who spent lavishly while running unsuccessfully for Congress last year is challenging longtime incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. The Texas Democratic Party says it received David Alameel's paperwork today. Alameel has previously donated money to Cornyn, who is expected to win the Democratic nomination easily.
