Firefighters are mopping up after stopping the forward progress of a 15,000 acre grass fire west of Hobbs. Authorities say the two separate fires broke out Thursday and merged into one.
It's was burning on state and private land until its forward progress was stopped by nightfall. Crews now are doing mop-up, and all road closures in the area have been lifted.
No structures were burned, and there were no evacuations of residents in the Hobbs area.
Authorities say the cause of the fires are under investigation. About 50 firefighters fought the flames along with four single-engine air tankers.
