AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - David Ash passed for one touchdown and ran for another and Texas started the Charlie Strong era with an overpowering 38-7 win over North Texas in the season-opener for both teams Saturday night. Malcolm Brown ran for two touchdowns and Texas held North Texas to 94 total yards at Darrel K. Royal Memorial Stadium.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Davis Webb threw for 452 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas Tech to a 42-35 win over Central Arkansas last night. The sophomore quarterback also had two interceptions in Lubbock. DeAndre Washington of Texas Tech rushed for a career-high 104 yards on 20 carries.

IRVING, Texas (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys have waived running back Ryan Williams and receivers LaRon Byrd and Jamar Newsome while acquiring former LSU defensive end Lavar Edwards in a trade with Tennessee. Two of the team's five seventh-round draft picks this year were waived on Saturday, cornerback Terrance Mitchell and linebacker Will Smith.

HOUSTON (AP) - Scott Feldman pitched a three-hitter and the Houston Astros shut out the Texas Rangers 2-0 Saturday night. Feldman struck out five at Minute Maid Park and walked one in his second complete game this month.
