Many would say that Preston Smith is arguably the man who put Texas Tech University on the map. To this day, he's the only Lubbock resident and Tech graduate to ever serve as governor. Chancellor Dr. David Smith says that's just a hint of who he was and what he's done.
On Monday, Governor Perry ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at state buildings in memory of former Governor Preston Smith. Smith, who served as Texas' 40th governor, died of pneumonia at age 91 on Saturday in Lubbock.
"Preston Smith's service to the people of Texas and contributions to education leave a legacy that will benefit our state for years to come," Perry said.
In addition to his term as governor, Smith served as State Representative, State Senator and Lt. Governor in a career that spanned more than two decades.
Perry ordered flags at all state office buildings to be flown at haf-staff through sunset Friday, October 24.
