Apparent Suicide at Lubbock County Jail

The Texas Rangers are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Lubbock County Jail this weekend.

Nineteen year-old Brandon James Montoya was booked on Friday for revoking his probation on a marijuana charge. He was scheduled to serve a 90-day misdemeanor sentence, but hanged himself in the shower one day later.

"The first 72 hours, first week is normally very critical for individuals that come in the jail and tend to review their life when they are in a jail cell," said David Gutierrez, the Lubbock County Sheriff. "And unfortunately in Lubbock county, the state of Texas or any jail institution we find individuals who become depressed."

The last suicide in the jail occurred in the spring of 2000. The investigation is considered standard procedure.
