A new reading program has Lubbock students soaring to new heights.
Hodges elementary students released hundreds of red balloons and one hot air balloon into the Lubbock sky Monday morning. The event launched the Reading First program. The program promises to enhance reading skills at all levels, from struggling readers to advanced readers.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech Chancellor Dr. David Smith kicked off the Reading First program at Wheatley Elementary. He read to the children and even gave them a brief medical lesson on balance, using an impromptu juggling act.
The Reading First Program was made possible through a $17.4 million grant.
