What would the 4th of July be without fireworks? After all, fireworks represent those famous lyrics "the bombs bursting in air." You may know that is a reference to the British navy bombing Baltimore Harbor in the battle of 1812.
Well, we all know how that story ends. So it's disappointing not to have that symbol of freedom over our Lubbock skies on independence day. Disappointing but understandable.
Lubbock County Commissioners made the right call banning fireworks. Not only did they have to consider any public outcry, but the major economic effects on those who count on firework sales. Plus, a ban also meant the government would basically be shutting down one of the biggest events in the state:Lubbock's 4th on Broadway fireworks show. A tough call but the right one.
The threat to lives and property from wildfires far outweighs the need to celebrate with fireworks this year. Congratulations, Commissioners, for making the right call. Now let's all hope and pray for rain so we can return to enjoying one of our favorite American pastimes. And happy early Independence Day to everyone.
