Texas Tech men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie announced the hiring of associate head coach Chris Walker Wednesday. Walker, a native Houstonian, is the second announced hire to Gillispie's staf. The first: Chris Beard retained from Pat Knight's staff.
Walker was an assistant coach for two years, and played at Villanova. He also made coaching stops at Pepperdine, Vanderbilt, Loyola Marymount and New Mexico.
"Even though the Big East is great, the opportunity to come back to Texas Tech and get something positive going here was just something I couldn't refuse," said Walker.
Known as a great recruiter at Villanova, Walker talked more about Tech's philosophy in recruiting going forward, as well as the type of athletes the new staff will recruit.
"The same guys [we recruited] at Villanova are the same guys we want here...guys that can help us get to a Final Four and win a National Championship," said the former Milby High School star. "We're going to span the globe and recruit all over the world."
First-year head coach Billy Gillispie also complimented Walker not just as a recruiter but as an all-around coach.
"He's a great recruiter, he's a great coach, he's a great mentor. We couldn't be more pleased to have him here on our staff."
