Wildfire forces evacuations in Ruidoso, NM


Firefighters stopped the spread of a wildfire that erupted Thursday afternoon in Ruidoso, NM. Flames quickly engulfing several homes.  The fire charred about 10 acres, burned eight structures, and forced the evacuation of residents from the Pinecliff area east to DiPaolo Hill near the Ruidoso Downs race track.

The 150 firefighters working the blaze managed to keep the flames on the south side of U.S. Highway 70. Village manager Debi Lee says the quick response to the fire kept it from becoming a much bigger incident.

Additional details from Ruidoso Tourism Office:

  • Forward motion on the fire has been stopped
  • 150 fire fighting personnel are on scene
  • The fire has burned 10 acres 
  • 8 structures have been burned
  • 4 single engine attack tankers are on scene, each holds 800 gallons of fire retardant
  • 1 helicopter that is dropping 500 gallons of water per drop (water is being taken from Mescalero Lake
  • The tankers, helicopter and fire personnel are employing "surround and drown" tactics 
  • There is a mandatory evacuation of the Pinecliff area and east to DiPaolo Hill across from the Ruidoso Downs Race Track
  • Incident Command Post is located in the Bealls parking lot at 209 Highway 70 East
  • Evacuation Shelter is located at the Gateway Church of Christ on Sudderth
