Monterey girls basketball coach Jill Schneider was proudly wearing her gold medal at the high school Monday afternoon. Schneider guided the USA U16 girls to the championship in Mexico Saturday as they beat Brazil.
For Schneider, it's her 5th gold medal. She won 4 as a player, but lost out on earning one in the 1980 Olympics when the USA boycotted those games. This is her first gold medal as a coach.
"What an honor to represent your county. We talk a lot of times here at Monterey, representing our high school, being ambassadors for our high school. Once in a while, you get to represent your state in a State All-Star game, something along those lines. But to represent your country, it is far and away the greatest honor," said Schneider.
The Lady Plainsmen coach also credits her Monterey team for preparing her to coach a talented group of 16-year-olds. Schneider will now get to coach the USA team next year as a U17 squad in the World Championships in the Netherlands.
