Nearly half of all pregnancies in the USA are unintended, federal statistics show, an indication of the need for better contraceptive education.
According to the data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the majority of men and women considered 'at risk for pregnancy' used some form of contraception. The most popular among women was the pill (although tubal ligation was frequently mentioned by older women). Younger men most frequently used condoms, while older men reported vasectomy.
Many men reported that their partner's contraceptive was their own method of choice, which illustrates the importance of good communication between partners.
A reluctance to discuss birth control may explain the high rate of unintended pregnancies. Many forms of contraception are available, and most are effective when used correctly.
If you're in a sexually active relationship, it's vital that you discuss the matter openly. Don't ignore the possibility of an unintended pregnancy, and don't assume the matter will be addressed by your partner. Your doctor also can advise you.
