14 teams came to Jones AT&T Stadium with a shot at qualifying for the State 7-on-7 Tournament: two came out on top. The Frenship Tigers and the El Paso Franklin Cougars punched their bid to state Saturday.
The Tigers did so by beating Lubbock Cooper 33-20 in the afternoon game to win their pool and came out victorious again in the semifinal against Odessa High, 42-33. Frenship went on to beat Abilene High as well, placing the Lubbock-area team in the finals against El Paso Franklin. However, a Heat Advisory prevented the two teams from playing the finale, giving the two state-qualifying invites to both Franklin and Frenship.
In other results, Coronado downed Estacado 26-19, Monterey lost a shootout to El Paso Franklin 60-38, Odessa Permian took out Abilene High 27-7, and Abilene Cooper ran away from El Paso Chapin 55-34.
