Lubbock sports grill goes smoke-free to satisfy customers

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The first Lubbock sports grill to get a smoking permit under the revised city ordinance in 2001 voluntarily went smoke-free on Tuesday.

Loyd Turner, owner of the Caprock Café at 34th Street and Indiana Avenue, said the decision was not a difficult one.

"Since its opening in 1997, the percentage of Caprock customers who smoke has declined significantly. We cannot ignore this fact," Turner said.

"We appreciate very much the business that our smoking customers have provided us since 1997," Turner said. "We know there are fewer places for smokers to smoke in public. Our smoking customers need to know that they are extremely important to us, but we are simply trying to please the majority of our Caprock customers."

Turners added that a recent analysis showed that about 75% of their current customers are non-smokers. Professional services will be hired to clean and remove any lingering smoke odor from the location.
