Attempted Suicide at Lubbock County Jail

For the second time in as many weeks, the Lubbock County Sheriffs Office is dealing with the issue of suicide. As of Wednesday night, 25-year-old Jessie Velasquez was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center.

Lubbock County Sheriff David Gutierrez says Velasquez tried to hang herself from the bars in her jail cell with the mattress cover from her bed. Officers checked on Velasquez at noon Wednesday, then found her in distress just fifteen minutes later. "The initial investigation appears officers were doing their rounds regularly," said Lubbock County Sheriff David Gutierrez. "(There was) no indication she was considering suicide."

On September 19th, Velasquez was sentenced to five years in jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
