A prestigious award has been handed to a senior center here in Lubbock.
The Garrison Geriatric Education and Care Center has been awarded the Innovator of the Year Award from the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.
The honor actually applauds the parnership behind that facility on 4th St. Texas Tech and Sears Methodist Retirement System have joined efforts to bring new technology into caring for the elderly.
The Garrison Center is the only facility in the nation that is built on university land, using the many resources of a medical school.
"We work with allied health, nursing school, the medical school, and the school of pharmacy. So, it's multi-disciplinary for this nursing home," says Kena Dubberly, Garrison Center.
Not only is there a waiting list for the Alzheimer's and assisted care wings, but some, like this couple from Fort Worth, are already inquiring about the next phase of the Garrison Center, which is expected to develop retirement housing around the center for healthy seniors who just want to plan for the later stages in life.
