LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Wounded Snyder Police Officer Darrell Campbell was taken off a ventilator Thursday and his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Snyder Police Chief Terry Luecke told NewsChannel 11 Wednesday that Campbell has been showing signs of improvement. Luecke has been driving from Snyder to Lubbock to keep up with Campbell's progress.

Campbell had been in critical condition since he was shot in the head last week after responding to a call of shots fired in a west Snyder neighborhood.

Campbell's partner, Lee Ortiz, returned to work Wednesday. Ortiz had been placed on leave after shooting and killing the suspect who shot Campbell. Administrative leave is standard procedure for the department after any officer-involved shooting.
