Viagra - Like Drugs for Both Men and Women

A chemical discovered by the University of Arizona five years ago is under study now at Palatin Technologies, which means it is closer to being available as the newest so-called love drug. But instead of a pill like Viagra, this one is a nasal spray.

The new drug is simply called PT-141, also unlike other sex drugs, the man doesn't even have to be intimate yet for PT-141 to stimulate arousal within a half hour. The effect starts in the brain where it sets off sexual sparks in the neurons of the Hypothalamus. According to researchers, the study groups trying PT-141 said the effect was stronger and lasted longer than with Viagra.

Meanwhile, there is no FDA approved love drug for women yet, but researchers at the University of Michigan are testing a skin patch for women that contains a low dosage of testosterone, the hormone most responsible for the sex drive.

Dr. Nancy Reame says that natural levels of testosterone in women decline just like in men and are about half as high in their 50's as in their 20's.

The first tests of the patch were in women who had hysterectomies. Those women reported an average 80% improvement in sexual activity. But the makers of the PT-141 nasal spray for men and the testosterone skin patch for women say both products are still experimental and a few years away from FDA approval.
