A suspect in an Irving double homicide was arrested in Slaton Tuesday.

Ladale Cubit, 31, was arrested by the Lubbock Police Department with assistance from the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and the Slaton Police Department.

Cubit is being held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on capital murder charges from the Irving Police Department.

According to Irving Police, Cubit is accused of shooting and killing two people outside of an AT&T store in Irving on July 24th.

Mehboob Pirani, 35, and Rahim Merchant, 35, both died from gunshot wounds, according to Irving Public Information Officer John Argumaniz.

Argumaniz says his officers responded to a call of shots fired near the Irving Mall on July 24th.

Merchant was pronounced dead on the scene, and Pirani later died at an area hospital.

An investigator from Irving was sent to question Cubit in Lubbock.  Cubit will be held in Lubbock until he's brought back to Irving by the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.

According to Argumaniz, investigators have not determined a motive in the shootings, but it appears Cubit acted alone.

Witnesses provided police with suspect descriptions and a partial license plate. From that information, authorities were able to determine Cubit had Lubbock ties.

Irving Police contacted the Lubbock Police Department to advise them that Cubit may be in the area.
