Paintball gun mistaken for assault rifle leads to arrest

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock Police were on the scene of what appeared to be an armed standoff on the 2100 block of 30th Street Monday morning.

"We received a call from a neighbor saying a man was firing some sort of an assault rifle into the ground and then forced his way into a residence. We believed there was possibly a female inside who was taken hostage," Lubbock Police Sgt. Jonathan Stewart said.

Police blocked off the area around the apartment to about a one block radius and had AR-15 rifles out as they looked for the suspect.

Eventually the suspect and his girlfriend walked out of the apartment holding hands. "They had no idea what was going on and we discovered it was not a domestic disturbance and there was no assault rifle. The suspect only had a paintball gun and it is not illegal for him to use it on his own property," Sgt. Stewart explained.

The suspect was taken into police custody and arrested on unrelated charges.
