Pat Summitt diagnosed with early onset dementia

Posted: Updated:

A shocking diagnosis for Pat Summitt the all-time winningest coach in the history of NCAA basketball.  Summit is the women's basketball coach for Tennessee. She revealed today that she has been diagnosed with early onset dementia.  Coach Summit is only 59 years old.

After eight National Championships and an Olympic gold medal, she says she plans to continue coaching as long as she can, and the university is offering its support.

The majority of cases of dementia show up in people over age 65, with 50 percent of them after age 85.  The Alzheimer's Association says early onset dementia has been recorded in some patients as young as 35.
