Texas Tech researchers probe Hurricane Irene's impact

Posted: Updated:
OUTER BANKS, NC (KCBD) -

As Hurricane Irene approaches the east coast, Texas Tech hurricane researchers are about one hundred miles away from where the storm is expected to make its first impact.

The team is deploying two dozen probes that will allow them to study the structures of hurricanes. Probes will collect data on wind speed, direction, barometric pressure, and intensity.

Researchers hope the work will allow folks to better understand the science of hurricanes and help forecasters improve prediction methods.

Tech joins other schools like the University of Oklahoma, the University of Florida, and Clemson University.

We'll hear from team members and bring you pictures from their journey coming up tonight on the news at 6.
