Healthy Kids by 2020 Bike Parade

Put the pedals in motion and begin a journey to get fit as a family by attending the second annual "Healthy Kids" 2020 (hk2020) bike parade and membership drive hosted by Covenant Hospital Plainview. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a meeting and membership drive at the Rotary Building at Runningwater Draw Park in Plainview. The bike parade will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Hk2020 was created by Covenant Hospital Plainview to proactively fight the childhood obesity epidemic and impact the lives of our next generation. The program is free and all hk2020 sponsored events encourage the entire family to lead healthier lives - body, mind and spirit.

Since the program's launch in 2008, hk2020 has continued to grow each year. Last year, the program had more than 300 participants.

To become part of hk2020, parents must complete a registration form. An hk2020 coordinator will then document the child's height and weight. Once the information is submitted, each kid receives an ID card, lanyard, hk2020 event calendar and activity log.

Parents are encouraged to get their child excited about making healthy choices. Hk2020 kids log their activities and turn them into the program coordinator at the end of each month in exchange for a lanyard pin and a chance to win a door prize.

Parents are also encouraged to bring their kids to monthly free hk2020 events. Last year's events included:

• Monthly free healthy-choice Wacky Packs at Sonic

• Hale County Health Department's Children's FunFest and Immunizations

• Hiking and fishing at Caprock Canyons State Park

• Swimming, Healthy Kids Day and the Halloween event at the YMCA

• Free healthy family dining night at West Texas Woodfire Grill

• Roller skating party

• Kids cooking school

• Sports Extravaganza

• Gardening lessons and seeds

• Educational tour of a local dairy and museum

• Bowling party

• Upwards Basketball

• Get Mooving Family Walk held in conjunction with the local Red, White and Moo Festival on July 4

Monthly club meetings are also offered for kids and their parents. A blog is another tool utilized to communicate events and healthy tips to kids and parents. The success of hk2020 is measured by tracking the participants' overall height and weight against the standard growth line.
