More and more kids are going to the doctor with back pain, which is blamed on carrying back packs that are simply too heavy.
Dr. Beth Cochran, a family practitioner at Covenant, says she's seen children as young as 8 years old complaining about back pain. This is why she says the American Academy of Pediatrics has set guidelines.
Dr. Cochran said, "The current recommendations for filling the backpack is no more than 10-15% of your body weight. If your child weighs 80 pounds –that's only 8-12 pounds in that backpack. Really a couple of textbooks can fill that up pretty quick."
She says backpacks should have wide straps, so kids can carry them with the weight distributed evenly -rather than slung over one shoulder.
