According to Klein, the Citibus fuss is not over yet

City Council reached a deal that seemed to end the controversy over Citibus in the coming year's budget.  Perhaps not.

The deal was a 25 cent hike in Citibus fares in exchange for not cutting routes from 30 minutes to once an hour.

City Council Member Todd Klein says a fare hike is not needed.  "For those seniors already choosing between food and medicine this proposal only makes their lives that much more harsh," Klein says on his Facebook page.

Klein also says the fare hike is not needed.  "The revenue derived is small, and with the anticipated reduction of ridership from the proposed increase even smaller."

Klein also says there are other ways to fund Citibus but he was not specific on his Facebook page.  "I remain hopeful that the Council will consider postponing the proposed fare increase on Citibus."

A public hearing is scheduled Wednesday at noon in the bus transfer plaza, 801 Broadway.  The Citibus Board will hear those comments and make a recommendation to the City Council on Thursday.

There was also a public hearing last month.  Many were angry about proposed cutbacks to the route times.  Days later City Council voted in favor of keeping the route times but adding 25 cents to the cost of a ride.

John Wilson, Citibus General Manager, says, "There were citizens who spoke in favor of a rate hike to preserve their 30 minute routes."

Wilson also says, "Other citizens said the rate hike was too much to bear."

So what does management say?  Wilson answers, "Management would do whatever the city wants us to do.  It's a policy decision, not up the management."
