New information concerning PTSD

Posted: Updated:

A study of Northern Illinois University students provides a new clue about the causes of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In 2008 a former NIU student opened fire in a crowded lecture hall, killing five and wounding a dozen. Coincidentally, over two hundred female students were participating in a study about stress before the shootings, so researchers had before-and-after data. They found symptoms of PTSD were more common in students who had variations in the gene that regulates serotonin, which is a brain chemical linked to mood. Researchers say they can use this information to determine who is at risk for PTSD, or help doctors determine the right treatment for patients already diagnosed. @@
