Red Raider Freshman Earns Big 12 Honor

LUBBOCK (KCBD) – Texas Tech freshman Breeann David became the second-straight Red Raider to earn a Big 12 weekly award Monday as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week.

David notched 28 kills over three matches last week as the Red Raiders finished 4-0, extending their winning streak to nine-straight, the school's longest run since the start of the 1997 season. She hit .254 over that span on 59 attempts while also adding nine digs.

The freshman finished with 12 kills in the Louisiana Tech Invitational opener against Southeastern Louisiana, marking the fourth time this year she's been in double digits. She added seven kills and seven digs in the finale against the host Lady Techsters en route to being named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Amanda Dowdy and tournament MVP Miara Cave.

Aubree Piper earned the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award last week, marking the first time in school history that two different players had been honored during the same season.

The Denver City, Texas product is also only the second Tech player to earn the Rookie of the Week award, joining Dowdy, who was honored early in the 2008 season. Dowdy's selection marked the last time a Tech player had been honored with a weekly award prior to this season.

David and the Red Raiders return to the court this weekend at the UT-Arlington Hilton Invitational. Tech will face Prairie View A&M Friday afternoon before wrapping the weekend against Louisiana-Lafayette and the host Mavericks on Saturday.
