Lubbock City Manager Narrowed to Four Candidates

The sun faded on city hall before the announcement came. The search committee, mulling over five finalists for the job of city manager, unable to cut the list down to three. Instead, four people will be recommended to the city council. Rickey Childers of Longview, Tommy Gonzalez of Lubbock, William Pupo of Surprise, Arizona, and Mark Watson of Temple. Cut from the list - Kathy Rice of Waco.

Search committee members were tight lipped about their decisions. Any comment on the decisions? "No comment," said search Committee Chairman Allen McInnes. Why four instead of three? "Why not?," replied McInnes

"I heard about 40 to 45 minutes ago," said finalist Tommy Gonzalez. At the household of the hometown favorite, Tommy Gonzalez and family took the news with appreciation. "I feel humbled by the support I've received from the committee and members of the council," he said.

On Friday the city council begins deliberations. Any butterflies? "We're taking it one step at a time," Gonzalez replied.
