Suspect caught on video during arson attempt

A suspect tries to set a Lubbock non-profit counseling center on fire, and it's all caught on camera.

The Lubbock Fire Marshal's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are investigating the arson at Family Counseling Services in the Briercroft Office Park, but they need your help.

Security cameras catch a suspect pulling up in a light colored truck. The person can be seen pouring a flammable liquid along the base of the counseling center late Saturday night ,and eventually lighting the liquid on fire.

Family Counseling Services Director Bryan Moffitt couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the video.

"It's really sad that they would target an organization that is helping," Moffitt said.

The building houses counselors that help individuals, families, and groups on a sliding pay scale.

No one was hurt, but Moffitt can't understand why someone might target the building.

"After having done this for 20 years I've never had anybody had ill will towards this type of group, because we're counselors. We talk about helping people and we do help a lot of people," Moffitt said.

On Saturday night, the counseling center got some help in return.

"Members of the community across the street all came to stomp it out. It's just a building and yet people came over and were trying to put it out by themselves," Moffitt recalled.

Since the building is so close to Children's Protective Services and Planned Parenthood, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is helping in the investigation.

"We would like to know why it happened," Moffitt said.

If you know any information that could lead investigators to a suspect you're urged to call Crime Line at (806)-741-1000 or the Lubbock Fire Marshal's Office at (806)-775-2646.

Lubbock Fire Marshals are requesting your help to identify a man caught on video after an intentionally set fire at Family Counseling Services at #9 Briercroft Center around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The incident was witnessed and reported to 911 by a person on their way to work.

Fire damage was limited to the outside of the building.  There were no injuries.

The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is assisting due to the near proximity of Children's Protective Services and Planned Parenthood.

It is unclear at this time if Family Counseling Services was even the intended target of this crime.  Security cameras captured an unidentified person pulling up to the east parking lot, getting out of their light colored pickup truck, pouring an ignitable liquid on the building, igniting the fluid, and then driving away.  Investigators collected evidence from the scene including the video.

Anyone with information on the identity of the person in the video is encouraged to contact the Fire Marshal's office at 775-2646 or Crime Line at 741-1000.
