Your tax dollars could be helping prescription drug abusers feed their habit. That's according to a new congressional report that found 170,000 Medicare recipients are using their part D benefits to do something called Doctor Shopping. In other words, they're going to multiple doctors for multiple prescriptions.
Democratic Senator Tom Carper from Delaware said, "We need to be honest about what these findings mean. They mean that federal dollars intended to address the health needs of the elderly, and the poor are instead being used to feed addictions or pad the wallets of drug dealers. This is clearly unacceptable."
The report by the Government Accountability Office found one woman in Georgia went to 57 different prescribers over the course of one year to get more than a four year supply of the powerful pain killer Oxycodone. That's more than 36 hundred pills.
