Former Lubbock resident goes on trial, murder for hire

WAUKESHA, WI (KCBD) -

Former Lubbock resident Darren Wold, 43, goes on trial Monday, accused of a murder-for-hire plot that ended in the brutal slaying of Kimberly Smith, 39 at the time, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.  According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Online, Wold will go on trial with his friend Jack Johnson, who most recently lived in Mexico.

Court records say Wold enlisted the help of Johnson to find a hit man, Justin Welch of California, who pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Court records say Wold was in a custody battle with Smith for their then-four-year-old son.  Authorities at the time said the boy was at home but did not witness the deadly stabbing of his mother.

Wold was arrested in Lubbock shortly after the October 2009 killing and extradited to Wisconsin for trial.  The Journal Sentinel says the trial is expected to last an estimated four weeks. Welch is expected to testify against Wold and Johnson.
